God, souls, and Turing: in defense of the theological objection to the Turing test

چکیده

It’s widely known that when Turing first introduced his “imitationgame” test for ascertaining whether a computing machine can think, he considered, and found wanting, a series objections to his position. It seems safe to say that one of these objections, the “Theological Objection” (TO), was regarded by Turing to be positively anemic, and that ever since he delivered his rapid (purported!) refutation over half a century ago, the received view has been that, indeed, this objection is as weak as can be. The present paper is devoted to showing that TO is not the pushover Turing, and others since, take it to be. ∗I’m greatly indebted to AISB for allowing me to present at the University of Reading symposium on Turing and his test; the presentation gave birth to this paper. I owe a special debt in this regard to Mark Bishop, who arranged all the specifics of my participation, provided invaluable guidance, and showed supernatural patience in waiting for me to get this paper done. Thanks are due as well to local host Kevin Warwick, whose student Huma Shah was invaluable, to John Barnden, Chair of the AISB, and to my colleague Jim Fahey for helpful insights.

Some improvements in fuzzy turing machines

In this paper, we improve some previous definitions of fuzzy-type Turing machines to obtain degrees of accepting and rejecting in a computational manner. We apply a BFS-based search method and some level’s upper bounds to propose a computational process in calculating degrees of accepting and rejecting. Next, we introduce the class of Extended Fuzzy Turing Machines equipped with indeterminacy s...

Bayesian perspective over time

Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

Image flip CAPTCHA

The massive and automated access to Web resources through robots has made it essential for Web service providers to make some conclusion about whether the "user" is a human or a robot. A Human Interaction Proof (HIP) like Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) offers a way to make such a distinction. CAPTCHA is a reverse Turing test used by Web serv...

Numerical Simulation of Hydraulic Frac-turing Process for an Iranian Gas Field in the Persian Gulf

Most of the Iranian oil and gas wells in the Persian Gulf region are producing through their natural productivity and, in the near future, the use of stimulation methods will be undoubtedly necessary. Hydraulic fracturing as a popular technique can be a stimulation candidate. Due to the absence of adequate research in this field, numerical simulation can be an appropriate method to investigate ...

SPOT PATTERNS IN GRAY SCOTT MODEL WITH APPLICATION TO EPIDEMIC CONTROL

In this work, we analyse a pair of two-dimensional coupled reaction-diusion equations known as the Gray-Scott model, in which spot patterns have been observed. We focus on stationary patterns, and begin by deriving the asymptotic scaling of the parameters and variables necessary for the analysis of these patterns. A complete bifurcation study of these solutions is presented. The main mathematic...
